Tonegawa is a noted expert in poison gas research. He frequently accompanies Blazing Sun forces in order to test various experimental chemical weapons, often developed to his own specifications. Accompanied by his faithful bodyguard Nori, who is responsible for his master’s safety, Tonegawa is a figure who strikes fear into opposing forces with barrages of noxious gas-bombs from his specialised grenade launcher.

Blazing Sun medics are even capable of offering on the spot treatment for gas injuries and other exotic wounds.

The modern Ashigaru infantryman is a tough, highly trained and supremely motivated fighting trooper. They are also well armed with formidable drum-fed automatic shotguns. These fire fearsome incendiary rounds, products of the Imperial Alchemical institute’s research. When faced with armour, they deploy the ferocious ‘Okha’ rocket-projector, capable of cracking open even enemy tanks.

The Kawachi-Kanpon Type 9 - nicknamed The Fireball - is a Double-barrelled heavy shotgun which fires incendiary shells, and is richly adorned in the fine ornate iconography of the Empire. Any enemy unlucky enough to find themselves either in the open, or behind light cover will be sent running for their lives once this fire-breathing monster opens fire.

When they need to cross open ground at speed, often to mount a blitz assault on a defended position, Blazing Sun Commanders will transport their Ashigaru in lightning fast Kote vehicles. As highlighted by its sleeker frame, large, tracked drive wheels and smoke belching stacks, the Kote favours speed over heavy armour. The roofless design even allows the Ashigaru to fire on the move, whilst remaining in heavy cover.

Thanks to the Imperial Alchemical Institute, Samurai mounts are no longer mere horses, but the amazing Type 9 Ryuma Steambike. This extraordinary machine is held aloft by a tiny variant of the repulsine cells used in the Empire’s great gyros, and propelled at frightening speed by hissing jets of superheated steam. The steambikers lead Blazing Sun attacks, swooping down on the foe with bared blades and batteries of deadly Dragon’s Breath shotguns.

The very concept of the ‘non-commissioned officer’ has long conflicted with the Blazing Sun’s feudal traditions. However, in recent times the transition of command further and further down the military hierarchy has become an ever more common occurrence. No more so is this the case than from within the Imperial Rifles. With a Sergeant, no longer needing direct instruction from an officer, Imperial Rifle Sections can offer fire support from behind the main advance, providing an essential thread to a Commander’s tactical tapestry.
 
Each Marksman of the Imperial Rifles is an individual who, during training, has shown themselves to be a cut above the rest when it comes to musketry. Armed with a customised ‘Long Teppo’, Marksmen add their precision firepower to an Imperial Rifle Section, striking a deadly blow from great range and harassing enemy troops and officers.
