General Erwin Rommel is most famous for his exploits as the ‘Desert Fox’ commanding the Deutsches Afrikakorps, in the Western Desert in 1941 and 1942. He began the Second World War commanding Hitler’s bodyguard. Despite his inexperience with armoured forces, Hitler supported his request to command 7. Panzerdivision in France. The speed of Rommel’s advance led to the division being nicknamed the ‘Ghost Division’ as neither the enemy nor his own commanders had any idea where it would be next.

The 7TP (meaning 7-Ton, Polish—weighing in at nearly 10 tons) light tank was a locally-produced, diesel-engined version of the British Vickers E.

Like the Vickers E, the first 40 completed were armed with twin wz. 30 machinegun turrets (labelled dw from dwuwieżowy or twin turret), while the final 95 had a single turret armed with the excellent Bofors 37mm wz. 37 gun (labelled jw from jednowieżowy or single turret). The Sd Kfz 7 (Mittlerer Zugkraftwagen 8t) was the main medium halftrack/tractor of the German Army. It was designed by Krauss-Maffei AG of Muenchen-Allach and was produced by Krauss-Maffei of Munich, Borgward of Bremen, Buessing-NAG of Berlin, Daimler-Benz of Berlin, and later by Saurer Werke AG of Vienna and Italian Breda.

In 1943 armour was added to a large number of the Sd Kfz 7/1 and 7/2’s in service. The vehicles were fitted with a lightly armoured (8mm thick) driver’s cab and plate protecting the engine compartment.

Like their unarmoured counterparts they continued to be used in the same roles, the added armour offering more protection from light weapons to the vehicles on the move, though the crew still only had the gun shield when firing.
