Warlord Games Imperial Romans (28mm)

Second in command to the Centurion in a Century the Optio was an important post for Legionary or auxiliary to aspire to. Wielding their trademark staff which would have been used to dress the ranks as much as for a badge of office. The knobbed end would have been put to as much use as the Centurion's vinestick!

Despite being formed to protect the Emperor they quickly became a powerful political force which could make or break an Emperor, Indeed the Praetorian Guard had, in its time had Emperors deposed, murdered and even auctioned the Roman Empire off at one point! Truly they were the power behind the throne.

The Legion’s first cohort was, at 800 men, larger than the others and led by the primus pilus – a career soldier and advisor to the legate himself. He was the Legion's senior Centurion and outranked by only a handful of officers.

This hoary, dramatically-posed veteran is just what you want to lead your best Cohort. Of course he can also be used as a regular centurion in your other units!

The Imperial Roman Scorpion catapult - manned by two Legionaries this war machine fires a heavy arrow unerringly into the massed ranks of the enemy or dashes defenders from their fortifications.

Every century in a Legion would have one of these bolt-throwers attached to it. One can only imagine the affect that massed ranks of these pouring steel-tipped bolts into the enemy position would have had.
