In an attempt to reduce the baggage train following Legions on the march the General Marius decreed trhat Legionaries would be responsible for carrying much of their own equipment,. Equipping them with yokes they quickly became known as Marius' Mules.

Here Warlord present their Marines, they are not much written about, and our models are based on best guess and evidence that we have available to us. We have given them non ferrous helmets as the last thing you need is more iron to clean of rust! Chain mail rather than Lorica we thought more appropriate to the flexibility of their tasks, and a more manageable shield, with appropriate naval markings of course..Spear and javelin rather than heavy pilum and a good warm cloak complete our study of these tough fellows.

This Medicus represents the cutting edge of Roman medical technology which sadly for his patient is on a par with your dad's tool box. By the time he's finished our brave legionary may well be wishing he'd tried his luck with the Celts.

Here we have a great objective marker, diorama piece or even the ultimate casualty marker for Hail Caesar. It consists a Medicus, a legionary and what's left of a legionary along with some baskets and tools.

Woe betide enemies of Rome who thought themselves safe behind their stockade, earthern rampart or high stone wall.All the fortifications in the world would count for naught when the Roman legions brought up their migty war engines. Chief amongst them was the Onager, a machinery of destruction that could vary in size, but hurl large shaped stones with the kick of a mule!

Indeed, the very name Onager comes from the wild ass which would defend itself by lashing out with its hooves scattering stones at attackers unwise enough to close.

Even if the stones could not batter down a wall, the wily Roman engineers could instead shoot flaming balls of naptha sailling over battlements to set afire towns and even ships.

Rarely used in open battle, the Onager could however be devestating as a hit from its lobbed smooth ammunition would crash through a formation of cavalry or infantry unlucky enough to be in the way.

"Put your back into it Julius, one more hit and were in"!

Second in command to the Centurion in a Century the Optio was an important post for Legionary or auxiliary to aspire to. Wielding their trademark staff which would have been used to dress the ranks as much as for a badge of office. The knobbed end would have been put to as much use as the Centurion's vinestick!
