The Imperial Roman Starter Army contains:

Each Roman Century would be provided with a Scorpion Catapult to accompany them on the battlefield but when fighting as a legion these would be combined to form a battery. Typically this would consist of 60 Scorpions and be located on a hill with the Legion protecting it's sides. With a rate of fire of up to four shots a minute this would send 240 bolts into the enemy army every minute. The weight and speed of these bolts would mean that shields and armour would offer little protection.

Auxiliaries is a term used to describe non-native soldiers in Roman service. The term nowadays can almost be read as pejorative, but the auxiliaries of Imperial Rome were hard fighting men!

Well-equipped and well-trained these men, sometimes from quite diverse backgrounds and cultures, bonded together into tough units, officered by Romans. Auxiliary units did a great deal of the fighting despite the glory boys in the Legions receiving all the acclaim!

The 24 auxiliaries in this boxed set are equipped in chainmail and carry the hasta stabbing spear and gladius shortsword. They carry the trademark oval shield and could be seen on the battlefield supporting the Legions or as an independent force in their own right.

Each box of Imperial Roman Auxiliaries contains enough plastic parts to make 24 Auxiliary models & 1 sheet of 35 shield transfers, with a clear background which will work over any coloured shield background.

The Roman Auxiliary Cohort contains 4 boxes of Roman Auxiliaries, enough to build 96 models.

Auxiliary troops fought in line much like their legionary counterparts and were not, as is fashionable to suggest, lesser quality troops - in fact they were the equal of the legionary in training, drill and combat capability.

Recruited initially from free provincial Roman subjects they went on to be recruited from the indigenous population as the Legions conquered new territory. It was not uncommon to see Celtic auxiliary units.

Armed with their spear, gladius and protected by a chainmail coat and their distinctive oval shield the auxiliary cohorts performed sterling work in the name of the various Emperors!
