Whilst the Commandoes did a lot of raiding and slitting of German sentry’s throats in WW2, they also fought in epic pitched battles requiring some proper heavy kit to make Jerry and his henchmen keep his head down!

This then is the Vickers machine gun. Given enough belts of 303 ammo and enough water to cool its barrel, this reliable gun would fire indefinitely. It is served by 3 crew.

Striking from the sea, most often from the dark, the army and naval Commandos caused great apprehension to German sentries and garrisons all over occupied Europe in their daring hit and run raids. The brainchild of Winston Churchill himself who had seen the damage Boer commandos could do to a static defensive force at first hand.

This elite force (volunteers all) was Britain's only viable way of taking a land war to the all conquering German army, who had thought themselves safe from Britain's land forces.

The most produced Cruiser tank the European theatre! Armed with a potent 75mm gun and with good cross country performance this vehicle was more than a match for the venerable Panzer IV! Though sadly it was still outclassed by the German “Big Cats”! Cromwells were used in the 7th armoured division and in the armoured recce regts of the Guards and 11th Armoured Divisions. Even the 6th Airborne armoured recce regt acquired about 8 Cromwells in Normandy and kept hold of them during the Winter fighting in “The Bulge”.

Normally a troop would comprise 3 Cromwells and a Firefly.

Few divisions in the British Army have earned such a valorous reputation so quickly as the Parachute Division. Known as the Red Devils by the Germans for their trademark maroon beret and dogged fighting ability, the British airborne force grew into a force to be reckoned with, whether delivered by Dakota aircraft, Horsa glider or as a front line shock troops.

Drawn from all over Britain, the volunteers established an awesome reputation for daring and sheer bloody-mindedness, culminating in their heroic but, ultimately, doomed defence of Arnhem bridge in Holland.

Although comparatively lightly-armed, British Paras could dish it out and would not hesitate to close to hand-to-hand fighting if needs be, screaming their warcries as they went.

The British Para Squad blister pack contains a 10 man section: Sergeant with Sten gun, 2-man Bren gun team, Corporal with Sten gun and 6 paratroopers armed with either Sten guns or SMLE rifles.

The Bren (or more accurately “universal”) carrier is possibly unique in all the armies of WW2. A small light weight armoured troop transport capable of carrying up to 6 men, it was used on every front the Commonwealth armies fought on – and even by the Russians via lease-lend and the Germans via captured examples! Their primary role was not recce as many think but simply as a transport to get troops right up to the fighting – and, if needs be, to fight from the carrier itself. Other roles included weapon carrier (3” mortar and Vickers medium machine gun) and towing AT guns as well as artillery observation vehicles.

Every Commonwealth infantry battalion had a carrier platoon of 4 sections of 3 carriers each. The motor battalions of the Armoured divisions used them in platoons of 3 sections. In both cases 2 carriers formed the HQ component. In addition every infantry company had a carrier at HQ simply as the CO’s runabout! Even the Parachute battalions had two each carried by glider! In short – carriers were everywhere!

The standard 3 inch mortar supported the British army in all theatres of war. This Chindit mortar has three crew.

Major-General Orde Wingate is quite possibly the most eccentric character from the Second World War. He would carry an onion around his neck that he would bite into as a snack and often went without clothing.

Major Bernard Fergusson served in the Black Watch before being given command of the 16th Infantry Brigade which was to be converted into a Chindits formation to operate deep behind the Japanese lines.

George Albert Cairns won the Victoria Cross after he was attacked by a Japanese officer who with his sword hacked off the lieutenant's left arm. The latter killed the officer, picked up the sword and continued to lead his men, slashing left and right with the captured sword, killing and wounding several of the enemy before he himself fell to the ground. This action so inspired his comrades that the Japanese were completely routed, a very rare occurrence at that time

Tough men doing a tough job, the Chindits took the war behind Japanese lines. Cut off and surrounded they fought at close quarters, things becoming quite medieval at times. This pack has four Chindits getting up close and personal, fighting with clubbed rifle, machete and bayonets...Ouch..
